Hologram Demonstration - Spain by JoFF Rae

When the people are gagged...

A protest group pulled off an undeniably futuristic stunt this weekend in Spain: they sent thousands of holograms parading past the lower house of the country’s parliament.

The augmented reality protest was just the latest in activist groups’ campaign against a series of “citizen security” bills, which received final passage in March. The new laws criminalize some forms of protest, such as gathering in front of Parliament. And among highly restrictive digital provisions, the law makes taking or distributing “unauthorized” photographs of police a crime punishable with a 30,000 euro fine. All in, the laws would create 45 new infractions, mostly centered on cracking down on dissent.

The new measures will go into effect July 1, if they survive national and European legal challenges.

No Somos Delito, which translates as We Are Not Crime, has been protesting what they call the country’s “gag law,” and in that context, the hologram protest is more than the stunt it might first appear. Under conditions in which people cannot put their bodies into the streets, the ghostly virtual projections serve both as protest and as a reminder of the protests that cannot occur.

The group even released a microsite—hologramasporlalibertad.org (Holograms for Freedom)—which lays out the opposition’s case against the law, including a lengthy document laying out what the new laws would do.

It features an introductory video of a woman turning into a hologram. “Ultimately, if you are a person, you won’t be allowed to express yourself freely,” she says, referring to the new Spanish law. “You will only be able to do it if you are a hologram.”

A spokesman for the group drove home the point to the Spanish newspaper, El Mundo. “Our protest with holograms is an irony,” he said. “With the restrictions we’re suffering on our freedoms of association and peaceful assembly, the last option that will be left to us will be to protest through our holograms.”

I have not been able to find any evidence of previous hologram protests, unless you consider the Tupac hologram as an attempt to destroy all that is holy.

Les Bosquets by JR by JoFF Rae

The film Les Bosquets brings the audience in a place where art and the power of image interweave. Based on the story of Ladj Ly and the performance of the ballet Les Bosquets of New York City Ballet (2014) inspired by the riots in the French suburbs in 2005, JR reveals its experience in the ghetto of Montfermeil where he created his first project, Portrait of a Generation. This film is a continuation of this 10 years project, for which he uses various means of expression and narration: video archives, choreography and testimony. This short film will be presented exclusively in galleries and museum shows.

#LaserTwitter Super Bowl #ONOMOLY by JoFF Rae

Today, the covert and nebulous #ONOMOLY released their video recap of Laser Twitter at the NFL Super Bowl experience in downtown Phoenix, AZ. Not officially a part of the Super Bowl in any way, #LaserTwitter was uncensored, unsponsored and unbridled. While Budweiser had their $9 million anti-hipster, anti-craft-beer “Macro Brew” ads, ONOMOLY gave citizens a chance to be heard while mocking the Bud Light #UpForWhatever campaign. “Everywhere I looked, I saw ONOMOLY and their messaging. It was on ALL of the buildings,” said a passerby, “Bud Light. Not up for FLAVOR.”

At one point, Bud Light sent Phoenix police officers over to the Laser Twitter building, telling them to stop projecting onto the nearby Palomar Hotel high-rise. “Bud Light’s campaign says they are #UpForWhatever, but clearly not up for free speech,” says a representative of ONOMOLY. “We are messengers of light. Bud Light sells bad tasting beer to people who are too drunk to know the difference.”

“This is about big corporations attempting to quash our voices. The NFL specifically prohibits things like #LaserTwitter. That’s why we did it. The NFL is a sham charity fleecing BILLIONS from taxpayers. People need to know whether they are a fan or not, they are directly subsidizing the wildly profitable NFL. People DO have something to say. We proved that with LaserTwitter.”

The NFL is a charity. No really, it is a 501c3 non-profit organization, yet it makes more money than any other sports entity. If you're a U.S. taxpayer then you're subsidizing the wildly profitable National Football League, regardless of whether you're a fan. They have grabbed almost 5 BILLION in taxpayer funds to build stadiums around the country. The NFL has begun "requesting" that host cities for future super bowls give them FREE everything just for using their city including police as security. The NFL = one GIANT scam.

Have something to say? Say it on #LaserTwitter. Uncensored. Unsponsored. A global real-time messaging platform of light. ANYONE can be a part of this. BE SUBVERSIVE. BE LIGHT.

Max Headroom WTTW Pirating Incident - 11/22/87 (Subtitled) by JoFF Rae

On a late-November evening in 1987, two Chicago television stations were victims of a broadcast signal intrusion. After a brief intrusion during the sports report on WGN's 9:00 news, a later broadcast on channel 11 - WTTW - of the Doctor Who episode "Horror of Fang Rock" was interrupted by a man wearing a Max Headroom mask.
